HD Hyundai Strengthens Its Push Into Brazil’s Construction Machinery Market

As global demand patterns shift, HD Hyundai’s construction machinery group is setting its sights on Brazil. With North America and Europe seeing slower growth, and sales in China continuing to decline, Brazil now stands out as a promising and high-margin market—especially for heavy-duty excavators used in mining and large infrastructure projects.

In the first quarter of this year alone, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment recorded a 9.5% increase in Brazilian sales compared to the same period last year, reaching 334 units. Demand surged for popular mid-sized excavators in the 15 to 22-ton range, alongside growing interest in compact wheel loaders suited for tight job sites and general construction work.

The company’s manufacturing base in Brazil is also running hotter than ever. The operational rate of its local factory jumped to 32.4%—a significant improvement from 26.5% the year prior. This uptick translated into solid financial gains, with the Brazilian subsidiary’s revenue rising from 46.2 billion won to 50.1 billion won over the same period.

HD Hyundai initially focused expansion efforts in North America and Europe starting in 2022. But after peaking in 2023, order volumes have begun tapering off. At the same time, gains in Brazil and India are now playing a vital role in offsetting those declines, helping stabilize the company’s global footprint.

In Brazil’s highly competitive construction equipment space, HD Hyundai estimates it currently holds a 10% market share, likely placing it second or third behind market leader Caterpillar. In a bid to improve this position, the company has expanded its product lineup beyond excavators, now offering backhoe loaders and motor graders to better serve local contractors.

Another strategic move is the upcoming merger between HD Hyundai Construction Equipment and HD Hyundai Infracore. From January 1st next year, the combined entity—HD Construction Equipment—will allow the DEVELON brand (formerly sold under Hyundai branding in Brazil) to be produced locally. This eliminates the need for costly imports and allows faster delivery, a major advantage in Brazil’s vast and logistically complex terrain.

With local manufacturing comes a streamlined supply chain. As industry experts note, having physical presence in the market—through local subsidiaries and plants—not only cuts costs but also strengthens customer relationships and service capabilities. HD Hyundai plans to expand production in Brazil beyond mid-size machinery to include high-value large excavators, positioning itself as a full-range equipment provider.
