MMA-ADA receives $110M excavator to advance agricultural works

In a major boost for agriculture in Region Five, the Mahaica-Mahaicony Abary-Agricultural Development Authority (MMA-ADA) in Onverwagt recently received a significant addition to its equipment lineup: a $110 million Amphibious Excavator. This high-tech machinery joins the agency’s existing fleet, including trucks and tractors, enhancing its ability to serve the area’s unique agricultural needs. Since the government’s term began in 2020, there’s been a dedicated effort to equip the agency with the necessary tools to thrive.

Designed for versatility, the Amphibious Excavator is perfectly suited for a range of tasks crucial in wetland environments, such as dredging canals, removing unwanted vegetation, restoring natural habitats, and stabilizing shorelines. Its introduction is part of a government initiative to improve agricultural infrastructure and environmental conservation efforts.

Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, officially delivered the excavator during his visit to Regions Five and Six. He emphasized its role in significantly boosting the region’s agricultural productivity, especially in drainage and irrigation projects. The region oversees a vast network—740 miles of canals and 650 miles of dams, which require regular maintenance to function properly. The new machine is pivotal for these tasks, ensuring waterways and dams are efficiently cleared and maintained.

Minister Mustapha also highlighted the transformative work being done since the current administration took office, noting substantial improvements in both machinery and the overall condition of the agricultural scheme. Traditionally faced with operational challenges due to outdated and malfunctioning equipment, the authority now celebrates a notable turnaround, credited to strategic investments in new machinery.

A testament to these advancements is the significant increase in rice cultivation—nearly 85,000 acres this season, with plans to expand to 100,000 acres in the upcoming period. This growth in agricultural activity is not only a reflection of improved machinery but also the result of more favorable farming conditions. The government’s decision to reduce land rental and drainage and irrigation (D&I) charges from $15,000 to $3,500 has given farmers in Region Five substantial financial relief, culminating in savings of around $1.3 billion.

Through these concerted efforts, the MMA-ADA aims to further develop the region’s agricultural potential, making significant strides in enhancing agricultural efficiency and environmental stewardship.
